The Applied Thermodynamics and Supercritical Fluids Research Group is conformed by Professor Gustavo Bolaños and his Ph.D and M.Sc students in Chemical Engineering. Their main interest is the development of new methods based on thermodynamics for adding value to natural resources. During the past years, the research group has carried out theoretical and experimental developments aimed to the  following applications:

  • Supercritical extraction of natural products and active principles present in vegetal material, antioxidants, essential oils and colorants.
  • Production of silica - carbonate building materials produced by infiltration with supercritical carbon dioxide
  • Application of the supercritical fluids as media to carry out chemical reactions of industrial interest.

The Supercritical Fluids research group usually carries out studies on these areas and offers consulting on several aspects of supercritical fluid technology, including equipment  design.

The members of this research group are affiliated to the International Society for the Advancement of Supercritical Fluids (ISASF), a professional organization that plays an important role on the diffusion, information and knowledge exchange among public and private institution.  We hope that this presentation allows you know about the possibilities that supercritical technologies offers to develop new products with high-added value.
